ABSTRACT. In the second half of the nineteenth century Russia there was an urgent need to create a museum which would house the ethnographic, archaeological and anthropological collections of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. This article examines the concept of creating the first permanent exhibition in the new Academic Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, which was created in St. Petersburg in 1879. The Anatomical and Ethnographic museums, separated from the St. Petersburg Kunstkamera in the early nineteenth century, were almost unknown to the public. The integration of these two museums’ collections and acquisition of new exhibition areas (1888) stimulated the development of the MAE as a research and educational center. The director of the MAE academician L.I. Schrenk and the academic curator F.K. Russow organized the first permanent exhibition of the museum, which opened its early ethnographic, archaeological and anthropological collections to the public. SPbF ARAS and MAE archival materials, as well as the Guidebook to the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Imperial Academy of Sciences by F.K. Russow (1891), help us to reconstruct the basic principles of the first permanent exhibition of the MAE (1889–1891).
