ABSTRACT. The review has been written on account of the State Prize for 2019 in Science and Technology awarded to the author “for his contribution to the studies of the Arctic cultural heritage”. It contains the following sections: “Anthropology of Movement”, “Arctic Nomadology”, “Method of Recording Movement”, “Arctic Nomadic Tradition and Ethnological Expertise”, “Northernness of Russia” and “Museums and Films”, which refl ect the main directions and results of fi eld research in Yamal, Taimyr, Gydan, the Polar Urals, the Russian North, Chukotka and other regions of the Arctic, as well as applied research and popularization of scientifi c knowledge and cultural heritage by means of cinema, photography and museum exhibitions. The most striking feature of the Arctic cultures is their high mobility, which allows nomads to embrace vast spaces and acquire resources scattered over them. The ethnography of the Arctic has given rise to a new theory, i.e. the anthropology of movement, which is both a research methodology and a technology for the application of scientifi c knowledge. The “View from the Arctic” reveals the northernness of Russia as its core identity conditioned by its geography and history.
