NADEZHDA A. STANULEVICH — — Candidate of Sciences in History, Junior Research Fellow, Laboratory of Museum Technologies, Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Saint-Petersburg, Russia)
ABSTRACT. The article presents basic information about the collection of negatives from Bazar Baradiin’s journey to Labrang in 1905–1907, which is housed in Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera). The author has analyzed records in the traveler’s published diary in order to reveal information about the photographs. The study is based on the information from the book of entries of the MAE RAS, the collection inventory, texts from the travel journal, and publications on the research topic. The article introduces information about the collection of negatives and some images attributed in the course of scientific description of museum objects. The author has identified and systematized diary entries related to the photographs, and identified negatives requiring additional examination of materials from the collections of the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences. She has also identified the following thematic blocks in Baradiin’s collection of negatives: architectural and landscape photography; ethnographic staged and non-staged photography; individual and group portraits; and object and interior photography. The main problems in the scientific study of the collection were the brevity of the descriptions of the negatives in the museum documentation and the generalization of information on particular types of shooting in Baradiin’s diary records.
