ABSTRACT. The article analyzes maps and documents from the archive of  Vladimir Charnolusky as a result of the ethnographer’s rethinking of his field materials in order to create a project of the economic exploration of the Kola Peninsula. These materials comprehensively reflect the specifics of the region’s economy, everyday life, cultural dynamics and interaction of the local population with the natural environment at the turn of the  1930s. The author distinguishes the theoretical foundations of the project, i.e. the idea of ethnogeography by V. Bogoraz and that of economic geography by V. Semenov-Tyan-Shansky. Charnolusky’s project is considered in the context of these ideas, as well as of the history of maps in social theory, Soviet ethnography, and the tradition of cartographic representation of the Kola Peninsula. The article highlights the differences between the maps in the published works of Charnolusky and the materials from his archive. Maps from the archive are classified by scale and topic; also documents for the cartographic materials are listed. The author describes Charnolusky’s method of field research and systematization of ideas about the territory (places of work, types of objects). He suggests that the materials remained unpublished due to the lack of simplification (deflation strategy according to B. Latour), and because the late 1950s–early 1960s theoretical models demanded “clarification and additions” from the project.
