Stepanova O. Selkup Field 1925–1928 in the Fate of Georgy N. and Ekaterina D. Prokofiev: According to the Materials from the MAE Photo Collection

ABSTRACT. The article explores a new source on the biography of Georgy Nikolaevich and Ekaterina Dmitrievna Prokofiev, i.e. photo collection MAE I 1177, which was collected by Georgy Prokofiev during his and Ekaterina Prokofieva’s work among the Selkups in the Yanov Stan village of the Tazovsky District of the Turukhansk Region in 1925–1928. The article provides a novel perspective, since nobody has looked so far into this collection as a source of insights into the Prokofievs’ activities. The collection visualizes the Selkup field of the Prokofievs and gives a clear idea of the conditions in which the work of scholars took place: the photographs from the collection reflect the rich traditional material and spiritual culture of the northern Selkups, still almost untouched by the Soviet transformations, the everyday life of the first nationality school of the region, and the faces of the Soviet power, which had just started changing Selkup traditional mode of life. The photographs tell about the origins of the Prokofievs’ academic background, indicate the range of problems and issues that predetermined the collection’s focus, and illustrate all the “Selkup” works of the scholars. The article assesses the Prokofievs’ contributions to Selkup Studies, made together and separately, and traces the stages of the academic development of each of the scholars.
