ABSTRACT. Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) of the Russian Academy of Sciences (MAE RAS) houses a collection of photographs by Dmitriy P. Bagaev. This professional photographer/artist is known as a historian, chief ethnographer of Pavlodar Region, researcher, and photo chronicler of the Irtysh Land. The collection of his photographs is not large in number of prints, but gives a sense of the scale of the master’s work. Bagaev created the photo history of the region; his photographs reflected all historically significant events in the area. The photographic heritage of Bagaev is of great documentary value, having captured the history and ethnography of the Irtysh Land for more than half a century. Bagaev’s historical photographs of Bayanaul and its environs are echoed by the photographs taken during the joint Russian-Kazakh historical-ethnographic expedition to the area in 2010.
