ABSTRACT. This paper is devoted to contemporary upgrading of rites in the Kazakh culture. In particular, the author analyses the influence of new forms of information transfer upon the ritual practices of the life cycle. The modern life offers to the people of today, by contrast to those living in the traditional world, additional options not only in selecting the ways of obtaining information but also in shaping their life strategies. In the present situation of the considerable increase both in the rate of information transfer and the number of the available channels of storage and information broadcasting, the ways of manifestation of one’s ethnic identity have also been significantly expanded. However, it should be remembered that rites-related materials found on the Web are only a virtual reflection of the actually existing practices. No new rite system is created in the cyber space; it is only one of the forms of presentation of the already existing rituals and, for the modern Kazakhs, an additional possibility to corroborate the extant familial and social connections. The information space of the Internet, mobile communication, messengers, and social networks have enabled users to build a new strategy of interactions; they have changed the very mechanism of communication and information preservation and transfer — not only within the ritual sphere but also in everyday life. In essence, in the modern world, we encounter a new way of self-presentation and socialization of an individual.
