ABSTRACT. The study is devoted to the Polish collections of the MAE and the role of Valentin Moshkov (1852–1922) in their formation. Moshkov was a high-ranking tsarist officer who, throughout his life and alongside his military service, was engaged in ethnographic research under the programs of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society and collected objects of traditional culture. The long-term cooperation of the researcher with the director of the MAE Vasily V. Radlov made it possible to enrich the museum with numerous collections, among which the Polish ones appear to be the least known. These collections comprise hundreds of household items, elements of folk costumes, samples and fragments of fabrics, and interior decorations from traditional dwellings typical for various regions of the Polish Kingdom and the adjacent provinces of the Russian Empire. In total, the MAE houses 11 object collections (MAE no. 254, 265, 294, 383, 405, 406, 415, 416, 417, 498, 499) and 4 illustrative ones (MAE no. 265A (7704), 294, 383, 393). For more than a century, the academic and museum heritage of Moshkov did not become a subject of study due to ideological attitudes. The authors of this work aim to fill the existing gap.
