ABSTRACT. The article is devoted to the issues of the matrimonial policy of Peter I, considered in the focus of the great-power imperial policy. Creating new chains of family ties with European monarchies, the emperor carried out the integration of his country into a single dynastic space, thereby trying to legitimize the positions of the Romanov dynasty in the European arena and strengthen Russia's status as a leading world power. The list of royal houses of interest to him was extensive: it included the German Welfs, Wittelsbachs and Mecklenburgs, the House of Oldenburg, the Austrian Habsburgs, the French and Spanish Bourbons, and the British Stuarts. The inclusion of representatives of these ancient sovereign families in the matrimonial networks of Peter I destroyed the hierarchical system familiar to the Moscow sovereigns, giving the reigning house of the Romanovs the features of a European monarchy, an integral attribute of which were broad family ties with the royal ruling dynasties.
