Lupanova Y. Pharmaceutical Jars in the Collection of the Lomonosov Museum of the MAE RAS

ABSTRACT. The inclusion of phials into the collections of the Lomonosov museum and demonstrating them at the exposition caused discussions several times; both views had to be sustained. Four out of five phials are presented at the modern exposition, which exists since 2003. The question is newly broached in conjunction with the discussed projects of the new permanent exhibition. The author of the article presents both opposite views expressed on these items, drawing on the publications of the archival documents of the period when collections of the Lomonosov museum were formed. Both views depend on the position on the role of the M. V. Lomonosov’s chemical researches in the development of Russian medicine and pharmacy. The negative view goes back to the works of P. I Walden, one of the authoritative experts in chemistry and its history. The positive view is however more sustainable; it is be supported by different kinds of thetexts by M. V. Lomonosov (scientific tractates, education projects, correspondence). The author of the article also presents the detailed description of phials, their assignment, theirhistory both as practical objects and as museum items.
