ABSTRACT. Saint Andrew’s Day, celebrated in Romania on November 30, was declared a national holiday ten years ago. The article examines the historical and cultural background for the formation of the holiday. Today the ideas that Apostle Andrew is the Patron Saint of Romania and that the adoption of Christianity in Romania is directly linked to his name are firmly rooted in the minds of many Romanians. The peculiarity of the holiday is its syncretic character, combining the ecclesiastical, folk and civil calendars. On the one hand, it bears information about the early Christian history of the Romanian people, and on the other, it preserves the idea of popular mythology. It is believed that on the night before St. Andrew’s Day wolves gather, living and dead strigoi appear. Associated with St. Andrew’s night are the traditions of fortune telling for a betrothed, as well as “the guarding of the garlic” and the sowing of the wheat grains traditions, etc. Traditions formerly characteristic of different historical areas are now being homogenized and spread throughout Romania owing to modern media and social media platforms.
