Asanova S. The First Royal Guest of the Emir of Bukhara, or How the Prince of Naples Travelled to Samarkand

ABSTRACT. In April 1890, the Prince of Naples (the future King of Italy, Victor Emmanuel III), arrived within the Bukhara Emirate via the Trans-Caspian Railway, hoping to remain incognito. Samarkand was the ultimate destination point of the Crown Prince’s journey, who had previously visited Belgrade, Varna, Istanbul, Batumi and Baku. The journey of the Crown Prince to the Bukhara Emirate, recently incorporated into the Russian Empire, was quite an adventure. In the Turkestan region, this news caused a stir in administrative circles, but from St. Petersburg it was ordered to meet the distinguished guest and take measures “to facilitate the journey of His Highness”. The manager of the political agency in Bukhara V. O. Klemm was appointed responsible for the meeting. Thus, most of the information about the trip of the Prince of Naples is known from the reports of Klemm and the correspondence of officials of various ranks, which are reflected in the materials of the Chancellery of the Turkestan General Government of the National Archives of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The article discusses the correspondence on the preparation of this meeting, the organization of recreational activities aimed at ensuring that “the high traveler was given the opportunity to see everything that seems curious and deserves attention, so that the Prince could make a favorable impression of his journey”. The meeting of the Prince and the Emir, the exchange of gifts, orders, as well as the historical places visited by the royal guest are reviewed in the article.
