ABSTRACT. The article deals with the phenomenon of childrens development of abandoned or converted temple and monastic objects in the 20th century in the Russian North. I propose to consider the objects under study as youth leisure spaces and consider specifically adolescent and children's practices. This perspective allows us to consider the ideas of the modern rural population about child agency. Two stages of the existence of revered objects are singled out and considered from the point of view of youth practices: institutional and non-institutional. At the first stage, schools and outbuildings were located in former temples and monasteries; at the second stage, they were mastered by children independently of adults. Youth agency is assessed as special and in some sense incomplete in terms of responsibility for the actions taken. In general, the perception of youth activity fits into the understanding of childhood in Western cultures that has developed over the past few hundred years within the framework of the discourses of “angels” and “devils”. The research sources are the author’s field materials collected in different regions of the Russian North (Arkhangelsk region, Republic of Karelia).
