ABSTRACT. Two female portraits of I. F. Ershova and A. K. Ershova are presented in the museum’s permanent exhibition “Mikhail Lomonosov and the 18th-Century Academy of Sciences”. These paintings complement and illustrate the history of the Lomonosov family, but are not directly related to the themes and the main concept of the exhibition, and therefore were ignored. Meanwhile, these portrait miniatures were created by unknown artist in Arkhangelsk, today they are in excellent condition and undoubtedly worthy of attention. An attempt has been made to apply a comprehensive method to study these pictorial portraits. The paintings are viewed as a historical monument reflecting certain cultural processes. The first paragraph is devoted to the life history of those portrayed, who are related to each other as mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. These part’s findings are based on archival information, and also represent a reconstruction of the Russian merchant life of the first half of the 19th century. The second paragraph of the article is devoted to the study of these portraits as objects of painting, created in special technique as part of the Russian traditions and art practices of the period. Finally, the portraits are considered as part of the tradition of provincial merchant portraiture, which flourished in the second quarter of the 19th century. It is assumed that the unknown painter from Arkhangelsk was close to the tradition of realistic painting, possibly to the Venetsianov art school. The time of creation of these portraits based on the life events, costumes and accessories of the portrayed is being specified.
