The series of articles offered to the reader’s attention contains materials from the meetings of the Central Asian section, as well as the round table of the XLVI Lavrov Central Asian-Caucasian readings, held in May 2023 at the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the support of the Russian Ethnographic Museum.

For several years now, the round table “Ethnocultural Specifics of Diplomacy: Rhetoric and Practice”, which continues to arouse constant interest among researchers of the region, has been held as part of the readings. This year, round table participants discussed issues related to documentary sources: from official letters of supreme rulers to the notes of economic purposes. These documents contain important information about the etiquette and ceremony of receiving foreign guests, the nature of gift exchange, the everyday problems that foreign travelers faced at the court of eastern rulers, etc. Materials for this discussion can be found in the articles by S. A. Asanova, N. A. Mazaev, A. I. Orazbaeva, R. Yu. Pochekaeva.

The materials published in this collection also discuss current issues of ethnographic modernity (articles by E. A. Bolashenkova and E. I. Larina). Traditionally, at the Lavrov Readings the results of work with museum collections are presented (article by V. A. Prishchepova). In addition, this is not the first time that the participants in the readings have addressed the topic of understanding ethnographic elements in artistic culture—an article by A. V. Ryabov and N. V. Kuznetsova is devoted to this topic.

The selection of articles published in this issue of the journal will be relevant both for narrow specialists and for a wide range of readers interested in this region.
