ABSTRACT. The life support system of the northern Selkups, one of the nomadic peoples of Siberia, is, by definition, associated with permanent movement. The objectives of the study were to examine and classify, for the first time, the whole range of  roads and communication routes along which the Selkups travelled to meet their vital needs. The research resulted in the following conclusions. In the area where the northern Selkups live, there has never been an all-season fixed road; nevertheless, there were many seasonal roads and communication routes of various types, purposes, modes of operation, degree of workload, which changed over time along with the Selkup life support system. The main movements of the Selkups and, accordingly, the main Selkup way-roads — in the past and in the present — are associated with the implementation of the nomadic economic cycle, including trips to the locations of settlements with shops. The reasons for the trips were also visiting relatives and neighbors, in tsarist times — the surrender of yasak to the prince, the transportation of officials and missionaries, the delivery of goods to shops located in hard-to-reach places, in Soviet times — visits to the administrative offices of villages and regional centers, boarding schools, health care institutions, etc. Selkup ways-roads were divided into winter and summer, water and land, fishing and leading to remote villages with shops. The study contains new materials about the "eternal" Selkup roads and the exploitation of winter roads by the Selkups in summer.
