ABSTRACT. The article examines the traditional Nogai puppetry oirteke/orta-teke. As shown by the results of the ethnological survey we conducted in 2021 on the topic: “Oirteke in the theatrical, musical and game Nogai tradition”, of all types of performances, puppetry was especially popular among the Nogais. This type of art was synthetic, suggesting a combination of decorative and applied, musical, and dramatic means of artistic expression. By the method of controlling puppets, oirteke belonged to the type of nativity puppetry. Ethnographic investigation shows that oirteke is consistently associated with dombra music. This genre of traditional art was revived thanks to the residents of the steppe village of Kunbatar, Nogaysky district, Dagestan. The authors note that the Nogai puppet theater is an example of a traditional performance that has parallels among other peoples of the world. For the Nogai oirteke, intended primarily for the education of children, both the comedy and the instructive element were significant, which ideologically brings it closer to the batlejka, as well as the Christmas crèches of Western Europe, especially Italian and German. At the same time, the balance of dramatic action and the traditional ethical postulates make the oirteke a valuable resource of ideas for the modern puppetry of Russia. The article concludes that the study of the oirteke is promising, since it allows for a better understanding of the traditional culture of the steppe dwellers, and also contributes to the enrichment of ethnological science with important material for comparative analysis of similar or analogous phenomena among other peoples of our country.
