ABSTRACT. The article is devoted to the collection of ethnographic samples gathered by T. E. Evseev, a famous ethnographer and local historian who stood at the origins of the Russian Mari studies, and was a founder of the National Mari Museum. T. E. Evseev was a native of Azyal village in the Tsarevokokshaysky Uyezd of Kazan province. Following his acquaintance with the Wichmans in 1906, he began his collecting activities working for the Finno-Ugrian Society and dispatching his handwritten and artifactual materials to Finland. Т. Е. Evseev repeatedly tried to cooperate with the Ethnographic Department of the Russian Museum, but without success. In 1925, during the East Finnish expedition of the Central Museum of People’s Studies, he got acquainted with B. M. Sokolov and initiated the formation of a major ethnographic Mari collection. Thereafter, T. E. Evseev, being a correspondent of the museum, supplemented the collection with more than 900 embroidery samples during 1925 and 1926. After the dissolution of the Museum of the Peoples of the USSR, the collection was transferred to the State Museum of Ethnography, where it has been stored ever since. The article considers the history of cooperation between T. Е. Evseev and the Ethnographic Department of the Russian Museum and the Museum of the Peoples of the USSR, provides a detailed description of the collection, and identifies the current research problems and prospects.
