ABSTRACT. The article discusses in detail the formation of scientific interests of hydrographer and Arctic explorer Nikolai Ivanovich Yevgenov (1888–1964) in the pre-Soviet period. During the selected period (1910–1919) Yevgenov was involved in polar expeditions — in 1910 he took part in the voyage on the ship ‘Bakan’ and in 1913–1915 he participated in the Arctic Ocean Hydrographic Expedition (GESLO-2). The article summarizes the results of Yevgenov’s research activities in the Arctic during this period — hydrographic, aerological, geophysical studies, as well as cartographic works. The author concludes that in these expeditions Yevgenov played a significant research role and gained unique experience, becoming one of the pioneers of the Northern Sea Route in 1914–1915. This experience allowed Yevgenov to return to the study of the Soviet Arctic after the Civil War and become one of the leading researchers of the Northern Sea Route in the USSR. The article also clarifies and reveals unknown facts of his early biography, pays attention to the family background and the process of becoming an officer of the Russian Imperial Navy N. I. Yevgenov. The work is carried out on the basis of a wide range of archival sources, as well as data published in document compilations.
